Wily Games of Winter

In the winter she curls up around a good book and dreams away the cold. ~Ben Aaronovitch, ~Broken Homes

He warned us with a boyish grin, inclement weather loomed. But basking as were, under cloudless skies and eighty degree warmth we remained unconcerned until dawn revealed the mountains; concealed by a blanket of darkness that poured into the valley like leftover gravy, and we froze.

It’s a safe bet that there were as many jackets as there were toys and games purchased that first frigid day – ha! And speaking of games, there’s one in particular on my mind today.

Requiring considerable concentration and a bounty of luck; Jenga® is a game that even cats are good at (according to the internet), and perfectly describes the structure of my work-a-day world.  All it takes is one integral piece—let alone two or three—to bring down the house, so to speak.  Although an unexpected collapse isn’t the end of the world, it can certainly be demanding; as evidenced by my abrupt disappearance.  Sorry about that, folks.

Besides, it’s Christmas!

So as I set my game back up and drag out all those merry memories from every Christmases past, of cookie smiles and Santa hats; gifts that can’t be wrapped, I’ll be thinking of all of my cyber friends too, as I take a holiday hiatus and send off sixty Christmas cards.  Does anyone still do that?

In the meantime I left a short Christmas story at Canyon Whispers and I’ll pop in on your posts whenever possible.  Until again, be warm, be well and above all be happy!

Merry Christmas!

  1. Hi, dear Diedre!

I don't send out 60 snail mail greeting cards, but I have already mailed my usual 8 for the year and am happy to have that task behind me

As did my original Shady Dell hangout, SDMM will remain open through the holidays. If you get the desire to connect with a loyal friend during your holiday hiatus, please come over and see me. You are one of the best things that happened to me in 2015, Deidre. I greatly value this friendship of ours. I wish you and your family the happiest of holidays, my dear friend!

    1. Hi Shady! No worries on me having the desire to visit SDMM where I'm always entertained and often enlightened!
I feel the same about our friendship and have sent a giant cyber-hug your way:-)
I'm relieved to know I'm not the only one still sending cards! Though most are sent to customers, receiving only fifteen in return last year made me reconsider the gesture.
A very merry Christmas to you and Mrs. Shady, my friend!

  3. Oh, yes. Our daily lives are just like Jenga. Since my dental surgery so much has fallen out of place.

If my cats could play Jenga, I'd be amazed. LOL

    Merry Christmas, Lady Diedre! :D

    1. You poor dear! Gads I hate teeth problems - but I can't say I mind being 'forced' to eat ice cream:-) What do you suppose would make a good Christmas flavor? Feel better soon, hon. You know, I bet your cats can indeed play many games - when you're not looking;-)

  5. I haven't played Jenga in years--decades in fact! A great if not an occasionally nerve wracking game.

I'm happy enough but I've been cold lately. In the range of 40 to 60's degree weather here in L.A. it feels like freezing. Brr!

    1. I've always enjoyed the challenge of Jenga, but you're right about nerve wracking:-)
Oh, I almost forgot these bone-chilling storms came past you first!I can't believe it's warmer where my dad is in N.C.! Isn't it something? I'm fairly certain the stores are all sold out of jackets after that frantic and massive mad dash on the first 'Hello, winter' day - ha!
