A to Z Blogging Challenge - Z

A to Z April (2022) Blogging Challenge

Hello, dear readers!

I’d like to thank you all in advance for stopping by, and I hope that at least a few on my list of remarkable buildings pique your interest as they did mine.

“Design is not a coincidence or a formula; it is a result of human reflection and vision in response to a specific challenge.” ~ Unknown

Zimmerman House

One of only two Usonian homes (the other is right down the street) in Manchester, New Hampshire, this home was designed almost entirely with the personal tastes of the homeowners in mind. By 1952 Frank Lloyd Wright had established his signature Usonian style in homes intended for middle-class families with modest requirements and was expanding the use of reinforced concrete in residential applications such as flooring.

For the Zimmerman couple, Wright’s attention to detail extended to include exterior garden design, interior furnishings, a small music stage, and to some extent, dishware.

The Zimmermans willed the home to the Currier Museum, which has maintained the grounds since 1988 and hosts tours for about 5000 visitors per year. Howard Mansfield was one such visitor.

An unusual home, undeniably. What do you think? Would you take a tour?

Many thanks to everyone who stopped by! You kept me at it ;-)

  1. Long and narrow. Like a permanent, custom mobile home.

  2. Hi Diedre - yes I'd take a tour ... and would love to visit ... Frank Lloyd Wright was an innovative architect/designer/ and more - I"m sure our film society put on a documentary film about him. Excellent Z - well done for finishing - Cheers Hilary

    1. I had no idea how often I would come across Wright's work in this challenge ;-) It's been fun and informative.

  3. This is a very cool place to end up. I think I might like to live in a house like this. No stairs to contend with if I had problems later in life getting up and down.

Great job pulling off your A to Z theme! It was a good one.

  4. Congratulations on making it to zee end, dIEDRE!

My first thought in seeing that exterior picture was something like “all hat, no cattle”. Only more like "all roof, no home".

That's a weird one but the interior is kind of neat, with the rustic wood and brick look.

  5. Deidre,

I'm sorry for not visiting last month. I was covered up with more than just my A2Z posts and failed miserably keeping up with others. Congratulations for staying on task to complete the challenge. I'm sure the home is impressive but the only way I'd tour this house or just about any other would be if it had free admission. The only home I ever paid to see was Biltmore Estates. :) Thanks for popping by to cast your vote in my lastest BOTB, my dear. Have a wonderful summer! ;)

    1. Hi Cathy - No worries. After all, I've been to your site and know just how extremely busy you are ;-)
      I've been to Biltmore too!
Aw, I'll stop by again before summer's out.

  6. I would most definitely take a tour! We sometimes drive by just "ordinary" houses here that have unusual architecture and I comment to my husband that I wish there would be home tours for some of them. I'm also really "bad" about going to estate sales inside people's houses to check out the houses; I rarely buy anything at them.

    Congrats on finishing the challenge!

    1. Hi Cathy!
That's exactly why I like estate sales ;-)
I also enjoy exploring old abandoned homes and buildings.
      Congratulations to you as well!
