A to Z Blogging Challenge - F

A to Z April (2022) Blogging Challenge

Hello, dear readers!

I’d like to thank you all in advance for stopping by, and I hope that at least a few on my list of remarkable buildings pique your interest as they did mine.

Fallingwater

How’s this for a summer home?

The only thing I find more intriguing than the name is that the house was designed and actually built over falling water.

Commissioned in 1934, Fallingwater proved to be Frank Lloyd Wright’s crowning achievement in a career that had, at that point, seen better days. An alleged deviation from original client plans (designing the house over the waterfall rather than across from it) only intensified Wright’s intended perception of architecture fused with nature.

There are steps in the living room that lead right down into the water below, and the constant sound of rushing water throughout the home notwithstanding, Mr. Edgar Kaufman and his wife and son enjoyed their summer home for nearly thirty years.

It was opened to the public in 1964 and designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1966.

What do you think? Could you spend a summer at Fallingwater?

  1. What an interesting A-Z topic, Deirdre! Fallingwater is certainly iconic. I don't think I'd want to stay there for a summer. See it, yes; but I love wide open spaces and a visible horizon. I'll have to check out your other remarkable buildings.

Isn't it beautiful? I'm always glad when they decide to preserve places like this.

  3. I think I might enjoy a summer at Fallingwater. Unless touring tourists became a nuisance.

    1. Hi Lee!

As secluded as it is, a tourist now and then might be welcome ;-) I guess I'd want to choose the visitors, though.
