Confessions and Awakenings

Welcome Writers! And Happy Cereal Day, everyone! Have you had your bowl today?

There is so much to celebrate this month, and not the least of which is today, and here’s why:   Take a look around our awesome group by clicking the links below and check out the many fantastic resources offered by the Insecure Writers Support Group, founded by Alex Cavanaugh, right here and right now on this first Wednesday of the month, when IWSG members convene through blogging, Facebook, and Twitter to talk about whatever is on our writing minds and agendas. See what we’re all talking about here

As for me:
So far, I’m achieving my goal of at least 1400 words per week. Granted, once in a while that may or may not include a creatively crafted shopping list, i.e., Dishwasher pillows, Coffee buddies, Dog cookies, Rabbit food, and Carnivore essentials.

National Ghostwriter’s Week:
Do you know what Alexander Dumas, Ian Fleming, Tom Clancy and Michael Crichton all had in common? They all worked with ghostwriters. I considered ghostwriting once, briefly. The loneliness of secrecy seemed too high a price for too little pay. But is it really? Could a ghost also be a star in his/her own right? Author of over 80 books and one of the most sought-after ghosts in the world, Andrew Crofts sheds some favorable light on the once considered dark craft of ghostwriting in his 2014 memoir “Confessions Of A Ghostwriter.”

National Women’s History Month:
After losing both her husband and mother in the course of a year, Kate Chopin; mother of six was left with enormous debt and deeply depressed. She took up writing as prescribed by her physician, for therapy, as well as possible income. Indeed, her stories appeared in periodicals and literary magazines, though providing little income. And writing did prove to be the perfect outlet for her “extraordinary energy.” Her second novel and best-known work “The Awakeningwas met with mostly unfavorable reviews and subsequently put out of print for 70 years! Critics claimed she was too far ahead of her time for her subject matter (southern feminism) to be embraced. The novel is now considered an American classic and lauded for its bold sophistication and artistry.

I can’t imagine having to be advised to write, can you?

If you could eliminate one word or phrase from the English language, what would it be?

Happy Writing!

IWSG - Writing for Impact

All writers are waiting for replies. Thats what Ive learned. Maybe all human beings are

Happy February all! And best wishes for International Expect Success Month’. Now is as good a time as any for me to concentrate on National Time Management Month ;- and I expect I will -  just as soon as I take part in this first Wednesday of the month, when IWSG members convene through blogging, Facebook and Twitter to talk about whatever is on our writing minds and agendas. See what we’re all talking about here.

The optional question of the month “How has writing affected your reading?” is interesting to me since I spoke of nearly the same thing last year at this time. It’s amazing how magnified the view is, only one year later. Oh, I still read for the joy of it, even as I watch for grammatical errors (grin). When I realized I was also watching (or waiting) for impact, it occurred to me that it wasn’t just for my enjoyment, but how I hope to be enjoyed. Through brooding skies and silent tears, and nails bitten down to the quick, we must have our sun-buttered mornings to ward off the devil’s stick – with impact.

Do you remember the first book you just had to own? (For me it was “Miss Lollipop’s Lion”) Do you remember where you read it first? Chances are it was at your school or local Library, where nearly all great titles are shared at almost no charge. Small wonder there are ‘Starving Writers’, right? But consider this, according to statistics shown in a recent study by Codex Group, only a third of books consumed actually generate revenue for authors and publishers alike, whereas reader word-of-mouth increases awareness (and sales) – for free! Will yours be the next book everyone talks about?

IWSG Holiday Frenzies!

December arrived with a bone-chilling wind out west this year. I gaze at a dozen summer plumped Dove huddling on a weaving ocotillo branch, and wonder how long before it snaps. Everything has its limits – including me.  And that’s basically what’s on my mind today, this first Wednesday of the month when IWSG members convene through blogging, Facebook and Twitter to talk about whatever is on our writing minds and agendas. See what we’re all talking about here.

By design or curious coincidence, the Question of the Month: “In terms of your writing career, where do you see yourself in 5 years, and how do you plan to get there?” is perfectly timed for the week of ‘National Write a Business Plan Month’!

Where do I begin when the trouble seems to lie in finishing what I’ve started?

Five books, five years and who knows what in between. Sounds doable, but something has to give. My day job? Nah, I like the money. Writing? No way! Socializing? But I love it…

Perhaps it’s the holiday frenzies! Right now I delight in the dazzling displays, the renewed sense of hope and plans being made, the promise of bright smiles, big hugs, and good cheer. The roaring blaze can wait, I think, while I enjoy the kindling warmth of the season.

So if I don’t get around as much as I’d like in the next few weeks, know that you’re not far from my thoughts or my insatiable interest and that I wish the happiest of holidays to one and all!

Merry Christmas, everyone!

What was the greatest gift you ever received in a small package?

He Crowned Thy Good

Good morning America, how are you?

If you’re reading this on Wednesday (as planned) that means the internet hasn’t crashed, we’ve survived the election, the sky didn’t fall and this is still our country! We’re on a roll folks. Let’s keep thinking the good thoughts as we go about preserving America as the greatest country in the world.

I’ve got a huge pot of chili simmering on the stove, but since it’s not yet ready, here’s a couple of what I like to call ‘comfort tunes’

Next week I’ll be digging up ghosts of patents past. Until then, stay strong, stand tall and stand together – We, the People, are the winners!

What song reminds you most of America? How many states have you visited? What is the best thing about living in your state?
