IWSG December 2022 Roses in December

Welcome readers, writers, authors, and bloggers!

We’re glad you’re here! It's the First Wednesday of the month; when we celebrate IWSG Day in the form of a blog hop featuring all of the members of the Insecure Writer's Support Group. Founded by author Alex Cavanaugh (Thank you, Captain!) and fostered by like-minded associates, IWSG is a comfortable place to share views and literary news from our perspective writing desks as we record our journeys. Check out the December newsletter here

Our awesome co-hosts this month are:  Joylene Nowell Butler, Chemist Ken, Natalie Aguirre, Nancy Gideon, and Cathrina Constantine!   Feel free to hop around and say hello to everyone!

The optional question for this month is: It's holiday time! Are the holidays a time to catch up or fall behind on writer goals?

December is such a busy month I try not to have any writing goals – per se. But naturally, there are lists to make, misplace, and find the day before Christmas when they are no longer useful. There are holiday cards – and letters! Does anyone write those lengthy chronicles of everything that happened in your neck of the woods for the last year? I receive one every year and thoroughly enjoy reading about life on the outskirts of Saskatchewan. My one and only response was promptly returned, stamped ADDRESS UNKNOWN. Hmm… [Dear Sam, bless your heart, if by some wrinkle in time (get it?) you’re reading this, keep the letters coming and call me. The number is still the same.] But, honestly,

“How did it get so late so soon?” ~ Dr. Seuss

While there’s no shortage of inspiration this time of year, it helps to have an empty First Thing (next year) basket handy for ideas you can’t yet get to ;-) So far, there’s only one message in my basket:

Have you ever gone caroling? Do you decorate much for the holidays?

Merry Christmas, everyone!

    1. Hi Natalie!
I often wonder what I was thinking as I raised little Christmas maniacs ;-) My daughter dragged out the tree on Halloween. So, yes. It gets pretty busy around here. But there's just no substitution for the warmth and closeness of family at Christmas. Thank you for co-hosting and have a wonderful holiday season!

  2. Finding the list the day before Christmas means it wasn't that important anyway!

    1. Hi Alex!
I think you're right, the second list always seems to have better ideas ;-)

  3. I refuse to believe that anyone has anything interesting to say about Saskatchewan. ;-)

    1. Hi C.D!
My outdoorsy friends are avid bow hunters and love to fish. They planned to retire there long before they planned how to pay for kid's college ;-) There must be a few rivers, lakes and forests nearby.
Wishing you a festive holiday season!

  4. Happy Holidays! I love getting Christmas cards so I send out about 70+ and yes, I put a newsletter in some of them. My family is spread from Alaska to South Carolina passing through Central Pennsylvania, so my friends and relatives all want to trade greetings and information with each other. It's chore, but a fun one when you finally are on the receiving end.

    1. Hi Judy!
I can see how that kind of distance would encourage newsletters and cards. How fun!
Wishing you all the cards and letters you could possible read by New Year's ;-)

  5. I receive a lot of eCards now, but very few by snailmail. I kind of miss those very tangible messages this time of year. And...I've never gone Christmas caroling. Maybe I should do that. Have a lovely Christmas.

    1. Hi Lee!
Ha! I wondered if anyone would even answer the caroling question ;-) I've been on hayrides, but never a sleighride.
Wishing you all the joys of Christmas and a delightfully good new year!

  6. I started watching Christmas movies in October. I've never started that early, but it felt right. Luckily there are so many that I could save my favourites for last. Stay warm.

    1. Hi Joylene,
Can it ever be too soon to embrace the joy or crave the magic of Christmas? I think not ;-) Watch away, my dear.
      Happy Holidays!

I have NEVER gone caroling (and everyone owes me a hearty "Thank you!" for that).

I do, however, decorate the house for Christmas to a fairly large extent (at least by 'Lifelong Bachelor' standards).

The tree is up, the Nativity set is up, various ornaments and garland are up, and... the snow is falling down as I type these words. It's beginning to look a lot like... a trip to Aloha Liquors for some Cruzan Black Strap Rum is in order.

    1. Hi there, Stephen T.,
Your decorations sound delightful. Snow already, huh? Do you think you'll write something Christmas-y?
      Cheers!

  8. Hi Diedre - late, but here ... I've been caroling with my brother and SIL around their village when I came back from South Africa ... it's fun seeing friends as we sang. I'm not ready - but now it's not up to me ... I'm sort of still catching my tail - like commenting ... cheers and enjoy your time with family and friends - cheers Hilary
