Communal Places for Literary

The national
landmark located at 425 Avenue of the Americas, now known as the Jefferson Market Library, carries more than just stories
within. Having once housed (only) female prisoners in an adjacent section that
is now a garden, and later, a courthouse before becoming the iconic bequest to
public literacy it is today, the building itself was the subject of chronicles
whispered. The atmospheric essence of this edifice, alone, is enough to entice readers in, while the remarkable architecture, complete with Victorian Gothic embellishments
such as decorative gables, pinnacles, and towering stained-glass windows, seems to attest
to claims of other-worldly presences. For example, nighttime shadows are reportedly
seen around the intricately redesigned clock tower - formerly a fire lookout
tower (circa 1833). A phantom woman waves from the balcony above the expansive
courtroom (now the adult reading room) and fleeting visages of ghosts have occurred
in the garden.

Anyone up for an adventure – and a good book?
“The library is inhabited
by creatures that come out of the pages at night” ~ Isabel Allende
I must see this library if I ever make it to Greenwich Village. The building looks so cool.
ReplyDeleteHi Natalie!
DeleteI think so too! I'd even wave at folks from the balcony, though I don't think they'd allow it ;-)
Hi Diedre - absolutely ... what a fun place to see - and yes I'd love to visit. Interesting history ...
ReplyDeleteThank you too for leaving the quote from Isabel Allende - I must read a book of hers I've got here ... cheers Hilary
Hi Hilary!
DeleteI agree. Would that every library were a little haunted. According to Isabel Allende, they are ;-)
Great building - very cool history. A haunted library seems like a great setting for a book!
ReplyDeleteHi Lynnette!
DeleteNot a building one could easily pass without noticing, is it? It sure would make a great setting for a book.
What an amazing magical looking building. I'd like to go there just to see it and explore inside.

Tossing It Out
Hi Lee!
DeleteAt one point they considered razing the building for something more modern. I'm glad they decided to preserve it.
